Shingles and Shakes
Shingles and shakes have an incredible thermal efficiency and also incredibly high water-proofness. Testing done at James Cook university at
Townsville approx. 30 years ago shows a correctly installed roof to have an incredible resistance to cyclonic winds.
Since then, new nail technology has seen “ring shank”, “clout head” nails manufactured in either stainless steel or mechanical galvanized
(designed for use in coil nailers).
These have a far greater resistance to withdrawal and a higher value in high wind areas and are deemed to be far superior.

Shingles tend to be a generalization of a wooden roofing tile, but also a name for a “sawn” wooden roofing tile, they can be various lengths, widths and thickness and either “parallel”or “tapered" from one end to the other.
Shingles tend to have a more geometrical / architectural look about them and are very suitable to wall cladding, as a feature in the gable ends of walls, over windows and also a quality roof membrane. These are best manufactured from an interlocking type grain and durable species timber. A “Bell”rating (fire retardant or resistance qualities) can be factored in when manufacturing. They are generally packed in ½ square meter bundles and packed onto non-returnable pallets containing 30 square meters. For accommodation at work sites, they can comfortably be double stacked. Longevity is governed by roof pitch, the steeper the better, leaf litter building up on the roof from surrounding tree’s and air circulation. A general idea for longevity might be 40 to 50 years. |
Shakes are the “rolls Royce” of the wooden roofing tiles.
Depending on shrinkage rates / species, they are split either on the “quarter” or ”backed” off from the prepared billets. They are sap and heart free and being split with the grain tend to last 2 to 3 times longer, installed with same specs as sawn shingles. Durable, low shrinkage species are best and as the above comment re ”Bell” rating, we can factor this is when making these shakes if applicable. Split shakes tend to vary slightly in length, they are random width from approx. 70 mm to 150 mm and the thickness is approximately 11mm..on average…but can vary. Shakes are generally packed in ½ square meter bundles and are packed 20 square meters onto a non-returnable pallet. They also can be double stacked on site. After manufacturing, they can be left to pre-season prior to install..as the packing method and stacking is such that they will dry/season slowly. |
A light organic oil may be applied to help the shingles or shakes acclimatise themselves to their new environment, but after this wears off, they are probably best left to grey off with age. Or they can just be installed and left to grey off.
